Naval Science IV:  Unit Two Chapter 2 Review Assignment.

1.  According to the reading, when can the chain of command be bypassed?  Do you think that it should be common for someone to bypass the chain of command?

 

2.  If it becomes necessary during an emergency to bypass the normal chain of command and report something directly to the CO or XO, what should be done as soon as possible after doing this?  Why do you think this is important?

 

3.  Why does Admiral Paul de Bigaulet de Cazanove feel that it is important to work through the proper petty officer rather than going directly to the sailor detailed to do a job?  Give an example of how this might happen within one of our Platoons.

 

4.  What is meant by the term “Span of Control”?  What does this mean for the Unit Commanding Officer who has to control a Unit of over 100 Cadets?

 

5.  The reading says that a wise commanding officer will not totally depend on what comes to them directly through the chain of command and must be alert to “filtering” of information by subordinates.  What do they mean by the “filtering” of information by subordinates?
